Stop Procrastination! Action Beats Excuses
Posted on April 24, 2025
Almost every day, I hear from clients and potential clients with a big idea or project on their hearts. Some are fired up and ready to go, others are feeling a bit unsure. And while a few dive in headfirst, others find themselves stuck, not quite sure how to take the next step.
No matter the details, it usually comes down to this: they think the project will be hard, costly, or just plain overwhelming. But here’s the thing—it’s all about perception, not reality.
Let’s be real—procrastination has snuck up on all of us at some point. For me? It typically shows up as an urgent need to color-code something, and a quick scroll that turns into a full-on social media dive.
So, how do we get unstuck when a new project has us frozen? Here are five simple strategies that have helped me push past the pause and get things rolling.
1. Know what’s worth your time—and what’s not:
Some tasks require you to get deep into the details. Others? You just need to know enough to keep things running smoothly. Take setting up an email newsletter, for example. If tools like Mailchimp or Constant Contact feel like a headache, and you’re spending hours trying to figure it out (and not enjoying a second of it), it’s okay to pass it off. Let someone else handle the setup. Once it’s ready to roll, you can take it from there—no need to be the one who built it from scratch to keep it going each month.
2. Ask yourself: “What else do I need to know?”
Sometimes we hold off on starting because we're missing key info. Other times, we actually have everything—we just haven’t pulled it all together yet. If you do need more details, get clear on exactly what’s missing and make a simple plan to find it. If you already have what you need, lay it all out so you can see the full picture. That clarity can give you the confidence to move forward.
3. Break the project down into categories:
Something like redesigning your website can seem like a huge task. But if you break it down, you’ll see more manageable chunks of work. In this case, start with the homepage and make a list of what you want to include – things like Facebook and LinkedIn social media icons, a headshot of yourself, a testimonial from a client, a link to your calendar. The point is, be as specific as you can.
4. Stop keeping everything in your head – put it on paper:
Without a written plan, I find myself wasting hours trying to recall what I've done and what's next. Take the time upfront to write a detailed plan so you can see the whole picture. It’ll save you time and effort in the long run.
5. Leave perfectionism behind:
It’s better to get started and improve the work rather than wait until you have every detail just right. You’ll learn as you go and make it better over time. Businesses evolve all the time – so develop the improvement muscle, and you’ll be able to stay current with what your business needs.
Overall, the hardest part of any new project is getting started. Apply these six simple ideas and put procrastination away forever!
Stop procrastinating and take action today. The longer you wait, the more time you lose. Commit to making progress, even in small steps, and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish. Remember, the key is starting now—not tomorrow. Keep pushing forward, and watch your goals become reality.
